Your website shouldn’t just blend in with everyone else’s, and it definitely shouldn’t feel robotic. That’s why today, I’m sharing five simple things you can do to make your website stand out from the competition and feel more human.

Before we dive in, a quick note: these tips aren’t necessarily about improving your SEO or ranking on Google (though some might help). Instead, they’re about making your website uniquely yours, building a connection with your audience, and showcasing the human being behind the content.

Let’s get in to it!

1. Add Emotion Through Personal Stories

If there’s one thing AI can’t replicate, it’s your personal experience. So, one of the best ways to bring a human touch to your website is through storytelling.

Share personal stories that reflect your journey, lessons from working with clients, or even simple observations from your day-to-day life. For instance, if a client’s testimonial reminds you of a particular challenge or win, expand on it! Share why it meant something to you. It’s those little details and emotions that make your content unique, relatable, and memorable. AI doesn’t have your lived experiences, and that’s a powerful advantage you have as a human.

2. Use Your Own Photos

While AI can generate some pretty slick visuals, nothing beats the authenticity of real photos—especially ones that showcase you, your team, or your business. There are two main ways to incorporate personal imagery:

  • Branding Photos: These are my top recommendation. A branding photographer can capture high-quality, professional images that are distinctly yours. These photos tell a story about who you are and what your business represents.
  • Mobile Phone Photos: While not as polished, using photos you’ve taken on your phone can still work, depending on the context. These can be particularly effective for more candid or behind-the-scenes content. Bonus? There’s metadata embedded in mobile photos that shows they’re authentic—AI-generated images don’t have that. But remember, when it comes to showcasing your brand’s professionalism, I’d still suggest hiring a branding photographer whenever possible.

3. Avoid Overused AI Language

Here’s a sneaky but effective tip: steer clear of phrases and terms commonly used by AI-generated copy. Certain words and phrases tend to show up again and again in AI-written content, so by being intentional with your word choices, you can differentiate yourself.

This tip comes from Kinsey over at Authentic AI for Entrepreneurs, and while I can’t remember the exact episode (seriously, go check out her podcast for all the good stuff), the advice sticks. Be mindful of your language and make it as personal, specific, and “you” as possible.

4. Fill the Content Gaps in Your Industry

Take a step back and look at what’s being said in your industry. Now, ask yourself: What’s missing?

Content gaps are opportunities for you to talk about what others aren’t. These gaps might be a unique perspective, a topic that’s often overlooked, or even addressing pain points that others aren’t touching on. The beauty of identifying and filling these gaps is that it positions you as a thought leader. You become the go-to for topics that aren’t already saturated in the market, giving you a chance to stand out even further.

5. Use Quotes and Specific Stats

One of the easiest ways to humanize your content is by referencing specific quotes or statistics. In Episode 5 of the podcast, I had copywriter Rose Crompton on to talk about this exact strategy. Quoting real people and using real data adds weight to your content and gives it credibility that AI simply can’t match. Whether you’re referencing industry studies or pulling in client testimonials, the specificity of real numbers and real voices will set your content apart.

And there you have it—five simple ways to make your website more human, more unique, and less like the AI-generated content that’s flooding the internet right now. Give these a try and watch as your online presence starts to feel more you and resonates with your audience on a deeper level.
