Do you ever find yourself moving “crap” from your desk to your kitchen counter just to feel like you have a “clean” workspace, only to move it back again when you need to cook dinner?
If your home feels like a constant shuffle of clutter, it’s possible your home’s layout might be sabotaging your focus.
In a recent conversation with Julie Corcoran, owner of JC Renovators, we got into why “pretty” design is secondary to functionality and how the “hidden science” of your home impacts your mental well-being and business performance.
The “Maze” of Inefficiency
Many homeowners in older houses feel they need more square footage, but Julie argues that most people actually just need better planning and storage.
She recalls a 1970s “vacation home” that was a literal maze: to get to the primary bedroom, you had to walk through the laundry room, then a bathroom, then a closet.
By removing the “maze” of doors and repurposing a small portion of a closet, Julie was able to double the laundry storage and add a powder bath.
“If it functions, the pretty is easy.” – Julie Corcoran
When things are where they belong and accessible, a space immediately feels better.
Why Your Design Might “Fall Flat”
One of the most overlooked “quiet luxury” items is layered lighting.
You can have the most beautiful room in the world, but without proper lighting, the design will “fall flat”.
Julie breaks lighting into three essential layers:
- Ambient: Overhead lighting that fills the room.
- Task: Directed light for work, like under-cabinet strips or desk lamps.
- Mood: Soft lighting, such as stairway lights, that creates a “feel” you can’t quite put your finger on but makes you want to stay in the room.
Is there a place for AI in home design?
While AI is a popular tool for generating “vibe” pictures, it often fails at the technical “legwork”.
Julie shares a story of a friend who used AI renderings only to find the products didn’t exist, or if they did, they cost $7,000 and came with European wiring that was unusable in his home.
A human designer acts as a “filter” for the thousands of choices at a tile or lighting store, ensuring materials can handle the “wear and tear” of real life and that the technical requirements (like wiring and plumbing) are actually feasible.
The Psychological Office
If you work from home, your office layout is the foundation of your professional brand.
Julie’s top tip for immediate focus? Stop turning your back to the door.
Psychologically, having your back to a door triggers “natural instincts” of worry because you don’t know what is behind you.
Facing the door creates a sense of calm and peace, even if it means you have to sacrifice a “pretty view” from your window.
Beyond the “Pretty”
Ultimately, home design is about more than aesthetics; it is a vital component of your mental health, physical health, and well-being.
We spend time in our “built environments”, and your home should be the starting point for your peace of mind.
