They Filled Out Your Form. Now What? (EP126)

Last week’s episode was about getting someone to take an action on your website. This week, we’re following up to that with what to do once they take that action. Because search visibility and website traffic mean squat if they don’t result in business. So let’s talk about what to do with the leads that come from your website.

Enjoy the episode!

🧰 I love me a good digital marketing tool. This week’s recommended tool is Claude Chrome extension.

I love it for YouTube. Shout out to Kalyca Zarich of HighMpact.com for this tip. Pull up this extension when you’re watching a YouTube video and use prompts that are specific to the video!

Peek inside my toolbox.

🎧 This week’s recommended podcast episode is LinkedIn, Instagram & Subject Line Tactics That Are Working in Q4 by the Marketing Millenials.

I enjoy listening to these shorter episodes. Good tactics and experiments to try.

Let’s set the scene. Someone came to your website. They filled out a form, booked a call, or downloaded something. What happens next?

Let me put it this way… you know how you go to the doctor and they take some tests. And then you have to wait for an unknown amount of time for results. And you wonder if they’ll even let you know?

The uncertainty is maddening. This is what your visitor is going through without giving them a confirmation. And I’m talking beyond the message that says ‘your form has been submitted’, someone will contact you shortly.

To use the Beetlejuice reference again, you know that scene where Beetlejuice is in the waiting room and he’s like the 9 millionth in line to be served?

Let’s give your audience a better experience.

Two things need to happen immediately. And they can be automated.

[1] Something that tells them their form went through. An email, a text, a thank-you page that actually says something instead of just “Submitted.”

[2] Tell them what happens next and when. “I’ll get back to you within one business day.” “You’ll get a link to book a time.” Whatever it is, say it.

If you provide them with the information of what’s next, they’re less likely to choose another business over yours. They might still reach out to other businesses, but think about this. If your website provides a better experience when they request information or whatever it is they asked for, then the visitor is more likely to do business with you.

Most website and scheduling platforms already have this available. Sometimes you’ll see it called a redirect when you have a form. When they hit the submit or send button, the visitor is redirected to another page, the thank you confirmation page.

Thank you for doing the action. Here’s what you can expect next. Here’s some additional information or come say hi over on Instagram or LinkedIn.

My clients have varied tools and workflows and processes so I’m going to use a system I have for an example. I have an offer called a Blog Page Power-Up Plan. This process I’m going to share could easily be applied to just about any online offer and parts of it for a newsletter sign up. Any CTA on your page.

The visitors signs up for the plan using a Gravity Form with a Stripe payment add on.

Upon submission, the visitor goes to a thank you page.
I get an email with the order.

My Make automation tool goes through a series of steps to prep a lot of the repetitive pieces for me like creating a new document and drafting an email.

It also sends that person’s email automatically to my newsletter list system.

Then I review the deliverable, tweak and adjust where I like and then send the email for delivery.

The form submission is tracked as event in my GA4 so I can see what channel it came from.

Actually, let me give you this as an example. Many of us use Calendly or another scheduling tool. They don’t always play nice automatically with our existing CRMs or newsletter systems. We either have to manually import into where we want to keep track of the lead or we export/import… blah blah blah.

Make automations, or even Zapier, can automatically take the email address of a specific calendly view and send it wherever you want.

The Takeaway

Go through your CTAs and follow one all the way through. Is there an area that could be updated to improve the experience your audience has.

If you’re not sure what your own follow-up looks like right now, or you suspect leads are slipping through, that’s a good question to bring to a Clarity Call. It’s a paid 90 minute session, where you bring a specific question or problem and leave with a clear answer or a clear action.

I’m here when you’re ready.
