Google Search Console (GSC) had an upgrade recently so I thought it was good timing to provide something tactical that you can do with the new information it provides.
They added a new area called Insights.
And this is important because looking at the data in GSC was a little fussy before. These new insights might make it simple at a glance.
So what do I mean by find easy tactics?
These are blogs that Google already knows about but aren’t yet ranking on first page for your target keyword.
Easy doesn’t mean fast, but there are things you can do that are easy or simple to help increase your website traffic.
A lot of industry folk will say target keywords that show up on page 2 of Google search results. But I think it’s ok to even look at keywords that are sitting on page 3 and 4.
Generally though, page 2 keywords, have a shorter distance to travel to page 1, where all the clicks happen, than a page 3 or 4 has.
1️⃣ My first tactic, and the most common one, is to pick a keyword that is sitting on page 2 of search results, that has a high number of impressions and a low click-through rate. There’s a filter to find those.
💡 Start with changing the SEO title and meta description only.
2️⃣ Another option is to find a page that you would like to see more traffic to.
Look at that page only and see what keywords are showing that it ranks for.
💡 Are there any keywords or topics in there that you could create a new blog post for orrrrrr perhaps tweak some headings or content in the current page?
3️⃣ Another option is to find a page that is declining in traffic.
💡 In GSC, this would be the clicks number.
- Go to the new Insights area
- Change the date period to 3 months
- Click the Trending Down area by page or keyword, whatever floats your boat more, and pick one to refresh.
- Click on that page or keyword though because it’s possible the rest of the data is showing improvement. Like the impressions or better ranking. Because if it’s just clicks going down and nothing else is changed, it’s possible that people just aren’t interested in it right now.
This tactic you’ll have to poke around a bit and see what you can find.
4️⃣ Lastly, see if you have any pages competing against each other for the same keyword.
💡 When you poke around in the Queries area, click some and see if there is a query/a keyword, that has multiple pages showing in Google. If you can consolidate them into one, try that and see if it works. Or maybe differentiate the two a bit more so Google doesn’t see them both for the same keyword.
⏳ For any of those tactics, wait two weeks; if you don’t see an improvement, then begin analyzing the page for modifications.
The Takeaway
You don’t need to overhaul your whole website to get more traffic. Sometimes it’s just finding a couple openings that can give you a bump in traffic. GSC makes it easier and now you’ve got a few ideas to start poking around.
