I get that digital marketing in general can feel tough. And the words ‘search engine optimization’—SEO for short—make a lot of small business owners roll their eyes in frustration. But I promise it doesn’t have to be that way.

And in this episode, I’ve got five effective SEO tips that any small business owner can benefit from.

1. Set Time Aside

Most small business owners struggle to find time for SEO. It’s not the most glamorous part of running a business, but it’s essential. Set aside at least two hours a week to focus on your SEO efforts. Block it out on your calendar and let your team know that’s your SEO time.

2. Choose Your Keywords

Keyword research is like the GPS for your SEO efforts. Without the right keywords, you’re website may not get as much traffic as it could. Spend some of that blocked-off time researching which keywords are relevant to your business. This is your starting point. Once you have a solid keyword list, you’ll have a clearer direction for generating content for your site.

3. Track the Numbers

Ever heard the saying, “What gets measured, gets managed”? That goes double for SEO. If you’re not tracking your results, you might as well be throwing darts with your eyes closed, while drinking a beer. Start with the basics—monitor your traffic, engagement rates, and lead generated or how many downloads happened. Keep an eye on what’s working and tweak what’s not. It’ll save you a lot of headaches down the road.

4. Get Your Blog Up and Running

A blog isn’t just a fun way to share your thoughts—it’s a game-changer for your SEO. The more content you create that’s optimized for your target audience, the easier it is for search engines to find you. And guess what? Blogs are still one of the top three content marketing strategies for a reason. If the idea of blogging makes you break out in a cold sweat, you’re not alone. I can help you get started with a Content Marketing Strategy that takes the stress out of the process.

5. Use Google Business Profile Listing

If you’re not using this, you’re missing out on one of the simplest ways to get more visibility. Google loves businesses that use its tools, and a profile listing is no exception. Fill out your profile, add your business details, and keep it updated with fresh content and photos. Treat it like a mini social media channel that shows up right in the search results. I have a free email course that goes into detail on how to optimize your listing. I’ll put a link in the show notes for you.

Here’s the one takeaway: Getting started with SEO might feel a little daunting, but these tips will help you take those first steps.
